課程概述 |
The planned topics include: time-independent Schrodinger equation, particle in a 1D box, quantum harmonic oscillator, quantum rigid rotor, atomic orbitals of hydrogen-like atoms, approximation methods (variational principle and perturbation theory), electronic structures of many-electron atoms, Born-Oppenheimer approximation, molecular orbital theory, Huckel theory, Fermi’s golden rule, molecular spectroscopy, and photochemistry. |
課程目標 |
This is an introductory course to the principles and applications of quantum mechanics in chemistry for sophomores. Through this course, students will learn how to understand and predict the behavior of atoms and molecules, including their electronic structures, chemical properties, and interactions with light. Students can expect to develop quantum mechanical intuitions and to be able to apply these concepts to a variety of chemical problems. |
課程要求 |
The prerequisites for this course are General Chemistry and the freshmen-level Calculus. In addition, certain lectures in this course will involve mathematical deductions using linear algebra, therefore the students are recommended to possess relevant knowledge beforehand.
The lectures are conducted in Mandarin, though problem sets, quizzes, and exams are available only in English. |
